Alessandro Borgo this year in the December retreat of the Bahrain Victorious he changed tables, literally. Last season he was sitting with the boys from I have to team up as he now sits alongside his new WorldTour teammates.
"Being alongside riders I only watched on television until two years ago," Borgo says, "is strange, but if I've come this far, it means I can do something good too. You're someone who loves a challenge. What does reaching the WorldTour mean?
Until three years ago, I didn't know what I was getting myself into; cycling was just a game. Then, little by little, it became a job. Over the last two years I've started setting goals for myself.I'm someone who believes a lot in himself and I had set myself the goal of doing two seasons as an under-23 and then entering the WorldTour. On a personal level, I'm happy that I achieved what I set out to do.Now that I'm here I've asked myself some more.
What's your assessment of these two years as an under-23?
In my first year I arrived in a new category, in a different and increasingly demanding cycling. I had started to gain my first experiences abroad, with very strong opponentsI entered the category without knowing anything about it and without expectations. After the first races in Belgium, I realized I was at a good level. 2025 was the year of consecration, with two important victories (Gent U23 and Italian U23 Championship, editor's note).
Is there anything you could or would have done better?
When people ask me this question I always answer that a regret is the second place in the stage Giro Next GenWinning would have been something extra. I had set myself the goal of a good stage result at the Avenir, but even then it didn't go as expected. However, it was a race that gave me a lot, in terms of experience and awareness.
In what sense?
In the queen stage I went very strong on the climbs, that performance helped me grow a lot. So much so that it brought me a call-up to the World Cup in RwandaIt was a goal since the beginning of the season. It was an unforgettable experience, both personally and as a rider.
In hindsight, was the World Cup in Rwanda too tough?
The route was demanding, but if the race had been run differently I could have had my say. Lorenzo won (Finn, ed.) a climber, and among the top ten I challenge you to find a rider who isn't.
Last season ended with second place in the Italian team time trial championship…
I wanted to do well, more for my teammates Marco and Bryan (Andreaus e Olive, ed.). Also because there was the risk that it could be their last race. I would have liked to help them win a tricolor jerseyThey've had some difficult years, unfortunately cycling doesn't give anything away. Starting over is never easy and not everyone understands what it means..
Let's get back to the challenges, what's this year's?
I definitely want to steal the show from the more experienced ones, especially Mohoric, who is the athlete I feel I can look up to. 2026 will be the year of experiences, I would like to do many races in Belgium and learn to move on those terrains.
Do you think they could become your races?
I would say yes. I say Belgium but I mean all the Classics, with cobblestones, cold, wind and walls.
Now that you're in the WorldTour, does the spirit have to remain the same as always?
I definitely can't go there with the idea of winning Roubaix next year, we'll have a captain and I'll have to work for him. We are a team that has rejuvenated itself a lot, with interesting additions like Alec SegaertWe are both young and want to emerge on the stones of the North. Obviously in these years the leader will be Mohoric and we will work for him, making yourself available to such a talent is even more beautiful.
Three years ago you didn't think you'd be here, now do you have any thoughts on Borgo in three years' time?
I think I can answer this question once my first professional season is over. Until you're in it and you're racing, it's difficult to understand what the WorldTour is and the difficulties associated with it.Even just riding through a cobbled section or going to the team presentation on the morning of Roubaix are things I can only imagine now.
