The 2022 Garmin Beat Yesterday Awards light up Milan

For the seventh year in a row Garmin has illuminated the city of Milan with the Beat Yesterday Awards, the awards strongly desired by the Italian branch of Garmin to reward extraordinary stories of ordinary people.

For Garmin Italy, it's an unmissable event, one that not even the pandemic could stop. Since last year, the public has also returned to the forefront who was an active participant in the beautiful awards ceremony held on December 1st at Villa Necchi Campiglio, one of Milan's most evocative and elegant locations.

Five extraordinary stories

As per tradition, Garmin Italy wanted to celebrate five extraordinary stories experienced by ordinary people. Each story is linked to the company's reference sectors: from cycling to running, from outdoor to automotive, through fitness and triathlon. 

There were over 1.000 submissions, and five stories were chosen from them.

Laura Broglio, truck driver, mother and writerA woman capable of perfectly combining her being a mother and a worker with driving a truck every day.

Cristina Nuti, the first Italian woman with multiple sclerosis to complete an Ironman. She has had a difficult life that has forced her to face truly difficult trials, such as illness.

Davide Pescuma, a Milanese in love with the sea despite not being born in a seaside cityA humble family background, with a mechanic father, his dream of joining the Luna Rossa youth project was interrupted at the peak of his powers by a serious knee injury. Despite all this, today Davide is part of the Luna Rossa shore team as hydraulics manager. His dream has come true.

Marcello Villani, a strong passion for the mountains which led him to understand how necessary it is to respect and listen to her because one's life depends on it.

Sabrina Schillaci, whose life changed in 2007 when a water accident left her husband quadriplegicToday Sabrina is a professional ultracyclist and coach. With her willpower, she has managed to support her husband during this delicate stage of his life and help others in need.

A sample for each winner

The protagonists of each story were awarded by prominent figures from the world of sport and entertainment, such as Antonella Palmisano, Olympic champion at Tokyo 2020, Filippo Gana, world champion in the individual pursuit, Simone Moro, mountaineer who holds the record for first winter ascents of an eight-thousander. They were joined by the Olympic gold medal Elia Viviani, the world sailing champion Federico Michetti, the technical commissioner of the national track cycling team Marco Villa and Norma Gimondi. For the entertainment world, radio presenters took to the stage Linus and Frank Lotta, the face of Sky Davide Camicioli, the voice of Mediaset Andrea Berton and the singer Ghemon.

A special award

The 2022 edition of the Beat Yesterday Awards saw the awarding of a special prize. 

Stefano Viganò, Administrator of Garmin Italia, and Vincenzo Nibali awarded Dr. Oreste Gentilini, Chief of Breast Surgery, Head of the Breast Unit at the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan and President EUBREAST Italy ETS, for its commendable commitment to scientific research against breast cancer

In October, Garmin Italy was the protagonist of the Pink October Challenge – One Step at a Time, a campaign launched by the company's European headquarters to encourage people across Europe to take action to raise funds for breast cancer charitiesThe Italian Garmin team has dedicated all its sporting activities to supporting EUBREAST, a group of independent non-profit associations whose primary goal is to fund research into less invasive approaches to breast cancer surgery. The commitment is to improve the quality of life of cancer patientsAll of this can help them return to their normal lifestyle as quickly as possible.
