In a our previous article end of 2020 We talked about Trek's commitment to reducing the use of plastic in the bike packaging phase.A concrete sign from the American company, thanks also to a program launched years ago to intervene on some production and logistics processesTrek recently presented its 2021 sustainability report, which is freely available at the following link: https://view.publitas.com/trek-bicycle/tk21_trek-sustainability-report_it/page/1

Eliminate tons of plastic
To illustrate the 2021 report is Davide Brambilla, CEO of Trek Italy, who wanted to immediately highlight the importance of having significantly reduced plastic wasteIn 2020, we introduced new packaging that halved non-recyclable parts. After this first step, we extended the process to all our bicycle and accessory packaging, eliminating over 160 tons of plastic in just one year.
Another extremely important front on which we worked was that of logisticsTo reduce emissions from land transport, Trek's European headquarters uses a batch shipping strategy. It reduces the mileage required to move product from distribution to storesAt the same time, the company is working to reduce its dependence on air transport, aiming to reduce mileage by 75% by 2024.

2024 target: zero waste quota
Alongside concrete interventions in the packaging and logistics sector, Trek is also overhauling its manufacturing process. LThe goal is to reduce the share of waste material to zero by 2024.To achieve this ambitious goal, the company is working on introducing alternative technical solutions: «We are committed to using recycled, recyclable, reclaimed or refurbished materials, and to design, when possible, production processes that are based on circularity – continues Brambilla -. Today, for example, we make 15 products entirely from recycled materials and we plan to develop many more in the near future."

The contribution of the individual
In Trek they are strongly convinced that environmental protection must however start from the behaviour of the individual. Like using the bicycle as a means of daily transportation. Filippo Zoboli, marketing manager of Trek Italia, underlines with these words the importance of the bicycle seen as a tool for change: «The post-pandemic period has demonstrated how useful, easy, economical, and healthy a bike ride is, whether for going to school or the office or for physical well-being».
