A few hours to go Giro d'Italia. The teams are preparing for the reconnaissance of the opening time trial. It's a truly unique time trial, being almost entirely downhill. In this waiting phase, we're having a chat with Luca Guercilena, team manager of the Trek-Segafredo di Vincenzo Nibali.
Luca, what does it mean to leave for the Giro with Nibali on your team, especially from your native Sicily?
It's already important to be here, given this particular year. Having Nibali is an added motivation for all of us. I thought Vincenzo might retire from the team he chose three years ago. Instead, this opportunity has arisen again, and we want to make the most of it. There's a really great atmosphere.
Is Vincenzo a true leader?
Absolutely. He's now so experienced that others recognize his role.
What makes you believe Nibali can still win?
Champions are always champions. What makes the difference is motivation, and that's not a problem with him.
Did you also intervene in the preparation, the boss?
As in all teams, we coordinate. For years now, we have had a proven staff with Josu Larrazabal that plans the work. This year, the Paul Slongo, who is Vincenzo's point of reference. He has his own ideas, but like all intelligent people, he's open to discussion.
There's concern that the Giro won't be able to finish in Milan. Will you race as if you had three weeks to go, or perhaps expecting it to finish sooner?
We'll race as if we were going to Milan. Also because the third week is the best for us. It's when Nibali can make the difference. Then we'll see if there's anything to gain before then.
Giulio Ciccone is still not feeling well after contracting COVID. Will his work fall to Nicola Conci, at least in these initial stages?
All the boys know they have to give their all for Vincenzo. They know that Giulio might not be in top form in these first few sets. They're motivated and will know how to do their job. We hope Ciccone will also be ready later on.
