In 32 days of competition, Alessandro Covi he has so far achieved 2 victories and 9 top 10s. Record-breaking numbers, but it was clear from the beginning of the year, from that 4th place to GP Castellon when we were still in January that this is a different Covi, more mature, more willing to take on certain responsibilitiesThe Piedmontese from Borgomanero is almost surprised to see so much attention on him, especially considering how these results project him among the most prominent Italians of the season, almost as a champion of the hard-fought rebirth of Italian cycling.
The rider of UAE he is currently in Slovenia and today he will begin his effort in a stage race, yet another of his season. When questioning him on the eve of the race, the first question focuses on what has changed to have led him to this consistency at a high level. and his answer is one of simplicity.

"I haven't had any major problems so far, I've been able to prepare calmly, something I hadn't done in the last two seasons. In 2023, I had mononucleosis, then various tendon problems last year, and just as I'd recovered, COVID hit. In short, I've had no peace. Apart from a small issue at the beginning of the year, which was resolved fairly quickly, I've found consistency in training, and that's led to the current COVID situation."
Was there a moment this season when you felt something clicked inside you?
I would say we have to go back to July of last year, to the head trauma that sealed that terrible period. From there, I realized I needed some time for myself, to build up a training base for at least a month. I had to start over, but slowly, reset everything.First of all, to be physically fit, then to get back to performing well. I've always believed, however, that this is my level, and I actually think I can still improve a lot.

The impression is that the calendar chosen by the UAE It suits you at this stage of your career…
Yes, let's just say that after two very tough years, physically but especially psychologically, I needed a slightly easier schedule, where I could regain my rhythm and self-confidence. I knew it was only a matter of time and, above all, that this period of bad luck had to end. By doing this calendar made up of short stage races, I have rediscovered serenity and consistency of performance and good results have arrived.
What was the effect of seeing the Giro d'Italia from afar, you who won? the stage in 2022?
It wasn't easy. When I saw the presentation, I remembered being at home in Munich. And I was very sad not to be there., then obviously I think that in those days I went running in Hungary, I got a good result, so I can be happy, but a stage like the Giro d'Italia is unique for an Italian and is sorely missed. At this point in my career, it was still the right choice to make.

You recently took second place in Hungary and eleventh place on Sunday at the Tour of Norway, two races with very different characteristics…
Yes, in Hungary, after the fall of Torres, I found myself as the team leader and I think I finalized everyone's work well. In Norway, however, I ran in support of Jan Christen who made the podium. On both occasions I proved to be in good condition and I was able to help Ian well in the decisive stage for the classification.. Instead, in Hungary I managed to get a good result for myself.
You also did very well in 2022, winning twice in Spain and a stage at the Giro d'Italia. Which of these two seasons do you prefer?
The answer is easy. For an Italian, winning a stage at the Giro is almost worth a career, many don't manage it.It's something I carry inside me. Now I want those emotions to happen again, and I work for it.

How is the team interpreting these results?
I think that's what the team was looking for from me this season, this type of calendar was designed so that I could find myselfMy morale had been a bit low these past two years; the goal was to collect as many points as possible. I think I'm delivering the answers that were expected of me.
What are your and the team's expectations for the Tour of Slovenia?
Here we have molano for the sprints in the flat stages, then Grosschartner will take care of the classification, but in case of narrow arrivals, if the race turns out to be a bit nervous, maybe we can play the stage, me and morgado. Let's say we'll be acting as a bit of a free hitter.

What's on the horizon for you as the season progresses? Perhaps a Grand Tour or the possibility of a call-up to the Azzurri for a title shot?
The Grand Tours are not scheduled this year, precisely to remain faithful to that process of rebirth. I will have more races on the calendar more or less similar to the ones I have had so far, with WT races in San Sebastian, Hamburg, then in China in OctoberHow could I not think about the blue? I've been doing it since I turned professional, so it would be an honor. I know that Villa He follows me and writes me every now and then. If he thinks I can be of any help, I'd be delighted.
