The Androni Giocattoli Sidermec team uses wheels Miche Supertype with 50 or 38 mm profile.
Lightness and performance are guaranteed by the high quality of the materials used. The rim, the most substantial component of the wheel, is made of 3K carbon fiber. The hub, meanwhile, is made of forged 7075 T6 aluminum to offer adequate strength and the best possible smoothness, thanks to sealed SKF bearings.
"The riders," explains Paolo Bisceglia, manager of Miche, "have the opportunity to choose the profile they consider most suitable based on the type of route they will be tackling. If we take into consideration the 50mm Supertype 550s, it can be definitely argued that they are high speed wheels.They are suitable for any type of terrain, even excellent uphill.
Luca Chirico, professional since 2015, is currently employed by the Androni Giocattoli Sidermec team.
"Personally," he says, "I use 38mm wheels. I'm not a sprinter who only does flat races. Thanks to the 38mm Supertypes I can feel comfortable both on the flat and uphill.”
Steel spokes
The spokes are made of stainless steel, inserted respecting the order of an innovative design which provides a 14+7 spoke pattern that optimally balances traction and braking forces, while maintaining an acceptable weight.
«They are thin rays – continues Bisceglia – but you know, we are interested in them being of smaller quantity, but of very high quality., rather than inserting an excessive number of spokes that break as soon as a small impact occurs. We prefer a well-designed distribution across the entire rim."
Also for clincher tires
The wheels are tubular, but there is also a clincher version that riders use in training and which apparently are so popular that they are also used in racing.
"They're the same model," says Bisceglia, "but for clinchers and tubeless tires. From what I know, riders also use them in racing, especially when there are particular weather difficulties which increase the risk of puncturesAccording to what the technicians tell us, the riders are extremely satisfied. The mechanics also say that our wheels are just the right amount of stiffness; they don't move or lose speed. "We prefer to talk to the staff," Bisceglia concludes, "otherwise we'd have to talk to 20 riders at once." A good thing about the wheels? The reactivity certainly contributes to the shooting in a satisfactory way. They are not wheels that remain nailed down, quite the opposite."
Lightweight and high-performance
The 50mm Supertype 550s weigh 1.488kg, while the 38mm 338s weigh 1.430kg. They are made from the exact same materials; both are disc brake wheels.
«As I always say – Bisceglia continues – the wheel should never be considered on the basis of the single piece with which it is assembled. Rather, the final difference will be made by the combination of these parts, each of which will contribute to making the wheel's cyclical motion smooth and homogeneous. It may seem obvious, he continues, but it's not at all. It should not be believed that one component compensated for the other.Everyone does their part and must do it in the best possible way to ensure maximum performance."
