The iconic Speedplay pedals were recently purchased by Wahoo, one of the leading brands in the GPS cycle computers and home trainer sector. This acquisition led to the creation of the new line of Californian pedals, designed 31 years ago and still technically relevant today.
Implement without changing
The new Wahoo Speedplay line aims to implement the technologies that made this pedal famous without distorting its functionality. Remember that Speedplay allows you to hook the shoe on both sides of the pedal, a unique feature for the road and triathlon world.
Minor maintenance
A first improvement can be found in the'introduction of sealed bearings, which means they no longer need regular oiling. This also increases their lifespan.
Another improvement concerns the elimination of the rubber part that surrounded the pedal, with the replacement of a metal partIt often happened that the rubber part wore out and the cleat started to move, but now with the new solution this problem has been eliminated. Another change was the elimination of flat keys in favor of installation using a hex key.
Four models
The biggest news is the simplification of the range with four pedal models: Comp, Zero, Nano and Aero.
At the base of the new range is the Comp model with the Chromoly pin and a weight of 232 grams. Stainless Steel Pin and with an weight of 222 grams we find the Zero. From September it will be possible for this model, choose from four different pin lengths: 50, 56, 59 and 63mmFor those who prefer aerodynamic efficiency there is the Aero model, also used by the triathlon champion Jan FrodenoThe peculiarity of this pedal is that one side is made with a shell that has the surface like golf balls. Also for the Aero the pin is made of stainless steel and its weight is 224 gramsThe fourth model is aimed at those who are passionate about lightness, in fact the Nano pedal stops the scale at 168 grams for the couple. Result obtained thanks to the titanium pin and carbon body with aluminum protection around the pedal.
Two cleats
The innovations have also reached the cleat, in fact now we find two types: black and grey. The latter has a Easy tension, which allows you to release the pedal more easily and will be standard with the Comp model. The black cleat has a standard voltage and will be standard on the other three models. The new cleats will also work with all previous Speedplay Zero models.
Three-way adjustments
The new updates also include the ability to have a clearance on all cleats 0 to 15 degrees for inward-outward heel tilt. In addition to this adjustment, the Wahoo Speedplay pedals allow you to advance or retreat the cleat and adjust it from right to left or vice versa for one centimeterThis allows you to customize the position of the shoe and therefore your pedaling experience to suit your needs. Furthermore, the space between your foot and the pedal is 8,5 millimeters if you can use the cleat without an adapter, or 11,5 millimeters with the adapter for shoes with three attachment holes. In any case, we are talking about a smaller size than other brands.
